Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we all have had to rethink how we live, work and play. The Recreation and Springbrook teams have been working creatively to safely offer new types of programs both in-person and at-home. This page lists all the Recreation and Springbrook programming for fall 2020.

Free Events

  • Finding Your Fun in Fridley Pop-up Events: Get out and enjoy the winter weather in Fridley Parks!  Join our staff for a variety of activities including: ice skating, snowshoeing, hiking, crafts and more. Receive a FREE thermal mug at your first event. Check out our Facebook and Instagram to keep updated in where we'll be visiting throughout the season and to share your adventures.
  • Ice Skate Drive: Lack of equipment, limits wintertime fun.  We are collecting used and unwanted ice skates to be offered for use at the Commons Park warming house free of charge. Skates can be dropped off at Fridley City Hall and Commons Warming House during open hours.
  • Lawn of the year: It’s time to select the best of the best! Over the course of the summer a number of residents have been selected as winners of our Lawn of the Week program for their exceptional lawns and gardens. It’s time to select one Lawn of the Week to be the first ever Lawn of the Year!
  • Talking Turkey Packet: Create new memories and traditions this year. Packet includes games, activities, and recipes for celebrating thanksgiving at home! (image below)

Preschool Activities – Ages 3-5 

Update: Take and Make Program.  We will provide the supplies and instructions for each of the crafts for you to pick up by appointment on the day that each class was scheduled to meet.

Evening Youth Activities – Gr. K-4

Crafts:

  • Everything Art: We will explore different areas of art such as: drawing, sculpture, and collage.
  • Painting: First learn the basics of painting, then we will paint with a variety of paints and techniques.
  • Sculpture & Clay Creations: Come play with Clay!  Learn building and shaping techniques using a variety of clay.
  • December 1: Holiday Greeting Cards: Design your on set of 12 holiday greeting cards. These handmade creations are sure to bring a smile to family and friends
  • December 8: Ornaments: Create two ornaments to dress up your tree or to give as a gift.
  • December 15: Gift Making: Make three gifts for loved ones.  We'll also wrap them up so it's a surprise for the recipient.

Sports:

  • Floor Hockey: Participants will learn the basic fundamentals while having fun with friends. 
  • Soccer & T-ball: Focusing on these two sports, this class is well-suited for first-time players. 
  • Sports Sampler: Explore a variety of sports from soccer to football to field hockey.
  • Musketeer FencingThis program introduces children to the fundamentals of fencing.
  • Basketball: This fun class is a great introduction to the sport of basketball.
  • Tae Kwon Do/Karate: Children will learn self-defense skills through fun games, obstacle courses and pad striking.

Adult Activities

Fitness:

  • ZumbaEnjoy the party as we shake to the rhythms of Latin-infused music/dance with our instructor Lenka Seferovic!
  • Aqua Zumba: Aqua ZUMBA gives new meaning to to the idea of a refreshing workout. Integrating the ZUMBA philosophy with traditional aquatic fitness, every class is a party!
  • Tae Kwon Do: This Korean Martial Art class will teach you to use your hands and feet without weapons.  Focusing on technique in the virtual sessions on Wednesday and fine tuning these skills during the in person classes on Saturdays.
  • POUNDTransforms drumming into an incredibly effective way of working out. Instead of listening to music, you become the music in this exhilarating full-body workout that combines cardio, conditioning, and strength training with yoga and Pilates-inspired movements.

Athletics/Sports:

  • Broomball: Teams will play 8 games (weather permitting). These games are officiated, no-checking league. Registration is currently open, and ends on December 21st. Leagues will begin early January (weather permitting). Games will be scheduled to start each hour, and will happen between 6pm-8pm. Games will be located at Commons Park, 555 61st Ave NE, Fridley, MN 55432. A schedule will be emailed to the team manager prior to the start of the league. The Rinks are located near the water tower. A warming house is available but will be limited.

All Ages Programs:

ROX: Recreation in a Box
We have you covered for fun at home with some exciting themed activities that will keep everyone entertained. Simply sign up and you will receive a kit full of goodies to get the party started.

  • Talkin' Turkey: Get set up for your Turkey Day celebration! Table decorations, silly challenges, cute recipe ideas and more.  
  • Gingerbread Party: All the goodies needed to create a masterpiece as well as other fun!
  • So Long 2020!: Oof. It's been quite a year - get ready to celebrate it's send-off!

Holiday Events

  • Turkey Leg 5K: This virtual race is a great way to get the family up and moving before the turkey coma sets in.
  • Winter Lights Contest: Help spread holiday cheer by entering your home in our Winter Lights Contest. Entries will be judged on the exterior of your home (overall impact, visual appeal, uniqueness, variety, and tidiness). For more information, click the link!


Springbrook Nature Center Activities


Virtual Programming

Get ready to explore the great outdoors wherever you are.  At home, at Springbrook, at your local park, the sky's the limit with this creative, hands-on program that looks at nature from the point of view of the artist, scientist, nature-enthusiast, and the tinkerer. Each box contains enough supplies for 3 people and includes instruction by energetic naturalists during a one time virtual gathering!

Purchase Nature Out of the Box and get all this:

  • A Box filled with 4 nature adventures for the whole family, including the supplies you will need and instructions for how to do each activity 
  • Naturalist-curated supplies to enhance your time outdoors 
  • Tips and tricks for how to include everyone, from toddlers to grownups
  • Virtual class with naturalists 

Choose to pick up your box ($50) or have it mailed to you ($60).  The boxes will be available for pick up at the nature center building (daily 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.) from January 4th - 7th.

You will be sent a zoom meeting invite for Thursday January 7th from 7-7:30.  During this call we will get to know one another through fun ice breakers, introduce the theme, demonstrate the activities, allow time for questions, and play a game together.

Polliwogs LogoNature Out of the Box - Polliwogs Edition

It's your favorite polliwogs class but in the comfort of your backyard or any of your favorite outside spaces!  This box includes supplies for four weeks of polliwogs classes.  Every Tuesday morning in January at 10 am a naturalist will start off the class virtually by reading a story and giving adults some tips and tricks to help their 2-5 year old child learn and grow through play!

$30/box (enough supplies for 1 child)

Curious Connections: Backyard Birding Basics

Calling all adults!  Springbrook Naturalists would like to help you make some curious connections this winter.  During this 3-evening series, we'll cover the basics of how to become a birder!  Classes happen 7 - 7:30 pm on:  January 6, January 13, and January 20.

Class Fee:  $15
